Interior designer (and former Olympian!) Erica McLain explains, “Biophilic design is the art and science of reconnecting humans with the natural world within built environments. Rooted in our innate biophilia—the deep evolutionary bond between humans and nature—it seeks to restore balance, calm, and vitality in our indoor spaces by integrating the principles and patterns of the natural world.”

Her clients’ needs and personal styles are the driving forces behind designer Darla Bankston May’s elegant interiors. Her Houston-based firm, Bankston May Associates, specializes in luxury residential and boutique hospitality projects, crafting highly personalized interiors that blend beauty and functionality.
Drawing inspiration from the exterior of her Spanish colonial home, Olga Doykhen integrated woodwork and black window frames, and balanced those elements with modern furniture and lighting. “The goal was to create a space my daughter could grow into,” Doykhen says.
New York City-based Studio Luddite elegantly subverts this notion with their newest release, the Pell Chandelier. Choosing instead to celebrate another aspect, this piece utilizes the raw edge of the hide, stacked in concentric circles to display the natural variation.
With its Spanish Colonial-style architecture and elevated interiors, designed by Olga Doykhen – Casa Moderna embodies contemporary Californian living at its best.
Fox Point Farms Opens as an “Agrihood” in San Diego. The project was developed by locally based Nolen Communities, with the design led by Tecture.
SANAA founders Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa have been named the recipients of Le Prix Charlotte Perriand for 2025 by the Créateurs Design Association & Awards.

Orange County–based designer Olga Doykhen similarly favors minimalism for her clients with allergies. She especially prioritizes layout and recommends an open floor plan with good airflow, minimal clutter, and fewer surfaces where dust can accumulate.
